South Summit 2018 has finally started in Madrid, kicking off what will surely be a startup and technology-filled week for the Spanish capital. Running until Friday, October 5, the event is expected to welcome more than 175 investor groups, totaling some $55 million from countries like the US, France, Japan and Israel—a 60% increase in investment from the previous 2017 edition.
There will be a lot to choose from, as South Summit has selected roughly a hundred projects from the more than 3.000 present startups participating. The winning one will have the chance of doing a micro-financing campaign an further compete for an additional $1 million surrounded by industry leaders in Silicon Valley.

As a new feature this year, the event is also also presenting EnlightED, an initiative of IE Business School and Fundación Telefónica which will discuss the future of education in the digital world. EnlightED, which runs side-to-side with the festival, includes the participation of relevant figures like Ken Robinson, expert in education and creativity, and Telefónica CEO Jose María Álvarez Pallete. Freddy Vega, CEO of online training platform Platzi, and David Cuartielles, co-founder of Arduino will also join the new initiative with many more.
This first day of the event had a bit of everything, from talkling about e-Sports, to consumer led disruptions, evaluating Spain’s pool of talent, confronting the diversity in the industry issue, incurring in e-commerce, fintech and much more. Big names like BBVA and Google have brought their own talks to showcase as well, joined by many other speakers from around the world.
The preview to the actual event was Open Innovation Forum, an exclusive event to push business strategies based in collective intelligence, better known as the titular Open Innovation. Henry Chesbrough, author known as the “father of Open Innovation”, was the person to open the curtain. Executives from Amazon, Salesforce, VISA and ENEL also joined him.

Later this year, South Summit CDMX will take place in Mexico City through December 3-4.
